Genesis Reunion Rumors

Rumor has it that there are rumblings going on beneath the surface that may result in a Genesis reunion of some kind. From a Sept. 30 article in the Ottawa Citizen (sorry, registration req'd) about Steve Hackett:

Genesis's management has approached Hackett, knowing that fans would salivate over the idea, especially if original singer Peter Gabriel was involved. But would Hackett be open to it, nearly 30 years after leaving the band because he was uncomfortable with the artistic compromises required for commercial success?

"Yes, I'd be a party to that particular bank raid, of course," he says with a laugh.

  1. Steve Hackett is playing the galaxy October 28th if anyone is interested

  2. Realistically, what are the odds of this actually happening? Besides, why would Genesis go for this afterbeing so successful with that new lead singer kid who replaces Phil? ... oh... yeah.

  3. I think the odds of Steve Hackett performing for an entire galaxy in one day are not very realistic.

  4. Last year, I would have said the odds of this happening wouldn't have been that great. That was, until Pink Floyd reunited. Since the impossible occured, I think the highly improbable has a chance.

The biggest thing that I see holding this up is not the fact that Gabriel is so popular as a solo act. Rather, it is Phil Collins' ego. Don't get me wrong-all the guys have remained good friends with each other over the years, so there's no bad blood going on there. I'm talking about Collins' dilemma on what incarnation of Genesis people would want to see-the '70s quintet or the '80s trio. Apparently, he is under the false impression that there are people out there who actually crave seeing "In Too Deep" live one more time. Seriously, anyone who would be interested in seeing Genesis reunited would be the kind that would get buzzed over seing "Watcher of the Skies" as opposed to "Hold On My Heart." As soon as Collins wakes up to that fact, the reunion could very well happen shortly thereafter.

  5. Yeah, but the scary truth is that he's right. They'd probably sell more tickets doing all that invisible touch stuff. Which don't get me wrong, I dig, but I really don't need to go pay for them to play it. Besides, this really would be the big news unless they had Pete with'em, and I don't think he'd go for singing harmony on Paperlate.

Phil just needs to realize that he's rich enough and give us what we want. I wanna see'em do The Knife.

  6. Recording a new cd, then touring would be preferable. If not, what would pete & steve do whilst "hits" like misunderstanding, paperlat, & I can't dance are played to the delight of the masses! Just kidding, at this point I'd go to any event that they chose to put together.

  7. One more thought, I hope they have a teleprompter for Pete to read the words to his own songs off of.

  10. Yes, Yes, Yes. I don't know if they would do the costuming that Gabriel used to do, but definately the intensity and drama Gabriel brought to the band would have to be a huge part. It's like Gene Simmons said about after young fans see the play live and walk away saying " Green Day who?", the later Genesis fans would walk away saying "phil who?".

  11. From Tina on Peter Gabriels website:
    Genesis Reunion
This has been the main topic of conversation recently and many of you have written in asking for the official word. I'm told that sadly, there is no truth in it; this rumour seems to come and go every few years and we think that this particular one has been fuelled by the fact that Phil, Peter and Steve Hackett have all been interviewed lately in connection with their solo careers and they are always asked about the Band. They all say the same thing; that they remain good friends and although there are no specific plans, they would not rule out the possibility at some time - although getting the five of them together would prove too hard given their various solo commitments

  12. Discussions have focused on a live performance of the Lamb album featuring the original line up and to coincide with a 5.1 release of the CD album.

A live reunion is definately in the planning, but when it happens is unknown...

The band all met up at Phil Collins gig in Glasgow last year to discuss possibilities.
